Hilltop Market was started in 1946 as a fruit stand. The Becco and Moneghini families worked in the coal mines in the winter time and tended gardens and orchards in the summer. They began selling their apples, then trucking the apples to Denver and bringing back oranges and bananas. Later other grocery items were added as well as a meat shop. Ray started working at Hilltop in 1963 and bought the store in 1972. Ray and Carol raised their kids, James and Suzi in the store. Suzi still works at the store and is raising her boys in the backroom, too.

The Lincoln Park area and Canon City have changed over the years and Hilltop has kept up with the times. New technologies such as electronic scales and checkouts have made shopping easy and quick. Old-fashioned service and value has remained the same with friendly, helpful employees. We are now feeding families who remember coming to the store with their grandparents and enjoy having something that remains the same.

Hilltop has become famous for its service meat shop and homemade sausage. Ray and his great staff in the butcher shop cut meat fresh every day and package it specifically for each customer. Ray’s old-world Italian Sausage is a favorite of everyone who tries it. He also makes German, Kielbasa, Andouille and Bratwurst. Hilltop is supplied by Affiliated Foods of Amarillo with quality Shurfine products and the best in produce and meats.

Ray and Carol Dunn and family are happy to part of the history and growth of Fremont County. We take pride in a job well done and being able to provide quality products to our customers and their families. In years to come, we strive to keep changing for the better, earning the trust of the community we live in.
